Streeter boys win playoff opener

Henry Porter guards an Osakis player in Thursday night's win.

What started out as a low-scoring affair turned out to be a lop-sided high-scoring victory for the Sauk Centre boys’ basketball team in the opening round of the 6AA sub-section playoffs.

Playing in front of a large home crowd, the Streeters defeated Osakis 73-45 Thursday night.

The score was just 21-9 at the half, but Sauk erupted for 52 second-half points. Josh Buschette led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points. Twelve different players scored a field goal as the Streeters shot 57 percent from the floor. Casey Weber was 4-for-5 from the field to finish with eight points. Cole Neubert and Seth Otte each had seven and Carter Kranz scored six off the bench.

The win advances the Streeters to Saturday’s sub-section semifinal against Staples-Motley (12-15) at 4:30 p.m. at St. John’s University. The Streeters defeated the Cardinals 67-63 on Jan. 14. The fourth-seeded Cardinals took down fifth-seeded Pierz 65-56 Friday. Other action included No. 2 seed Melrose upending No. 7 Holdingford 59-42, and No. 3 seeded Long Prairie-Grey Eagle beating No. 6 Pillager 58-41.

Melrose (17-9) will play Long Prairie/Grey Eagle (13-11) on Saturday at 6 p.m. at St. John’s University.  The winners of Saturday’s games will play Tuesday in the sub-section final at St. John’s.
