Sauk Centre grad performing at Paramount Theatre Saturday

Angela Smith will play Little Buttercup in the production HMS Pinafore.

Sauk Centre graduate Angela Christine Smith will be performing in St. Cloud Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre with the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players as “Little Buttercup” in HMS Pinafore

Smith has been a part of the NYGASP for several years and recently completed the G & S canon by performing in 13 operettas with the NYGASP.

“We have been touring more nationally the past five years,” she said. “Especially on the West Coast. We have also expanded to Canada, and this summer we will be heading to England again for The International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival.”

Smith is a product of the Sauk Centre High School choir program. She grew up singing in church choir with her mother. Her parents are Pastor Geary and Pastor Carol Jean Smith of St. Cloud where they founded Place of Hope Ministries. She is the granddaughter of Anne and Jerry Sogge of Sauk Centre.

She credits Sauk Centre Choir Director Bonnie Nelson with giving her a chance to show her talents and pursue a career in opera singing.

“I’m always eternally grateful to Bonnie Nelson for her guidance and nurturing while I was in high school,” Smith said. “She is a big part of my success to this day.”

Nelson said Smith was a special student during her years at Sauk Centre High School.

“Angela was a very fun student for me,” said Nelson. “She is one of the few students I have had in my career with an operatic voice.  It was a challenge for me to find age appropriate literature for her.”

Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield. She got her start with the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire at the College Light Opera Company on Cape Cod before moving to New York City.

Nelson said every time she hears certain Italian arias, she remembers working on them with Angie.

“She wanted to be in as much music as possible, and was involved in small groups also,” said Nelson. “I was so excited when she chose to continue in music in college and beyond.”

In addition to the show in St. Cloud, Smith will also perform with the NYGASP in Grand Rapids on March 18.
