Head coach of the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars for 21 seasons, B-B-E elementary teacher and boys' basketball coach Dave Montbriand announced his retirement from the coaching ranks today.

Montbriand's letter of resignation and retirement hasn't been acted on by the B-B-E school board, but that will be addressed at their regular April meeting.

"Upon the school board acting on it, the search for a new head coach will begin. I hope to remain in the program at a lower level as I continue to love basketball," said Montbriand.  "I feel very confident that my decision is the right one, and I look forward to supporting the new coach in any way I can."

Montbriand has an overall record of 388-173 in two separate stints as head coach. His first team in 1990-91 finished in second place in the West Central South Conference, and his second team made it to the Sub-Section 5A-3 championship game. The Jaguars continued to be successful both in the regular season and playoffs throughout the 1990s and then through the turn of the century when the Jaguars joined the Central Minnesota Conference in the 1999-2000 season.

Montbriand stepped away from the program after the 2004-05 season to become assistant varsity coach of the girls' basketball program. His '04-'05 team won the program's fourth sub-section championship title but lost one game short of the state tournament.

Fast forward to the 2008-09 season, Montbriand returned to the boys' basketball program as head coach. That team went 24-5 overall while winning their first-ever conference championship with a 12-2 mark in the Central Minnesota Conference. They lost in the Sub-Section 6AA-East title game that year.

In 2011 the Jaguars busted down the door to the state tournament and finished in second place. They repeated state trips in 2012 and 2014 and won the title both times. The Jaguars are currently riding a 69-game winning streak in the Central Minnesota Conference while winning the last six titles.

Of the 436 wins earned by the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team starting in the 1988-89 season, Montbriand's teams have contributed to 89 percent of the win total.
