Adam Froseth delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh to give the Sauk Centre baseball squad a 2-1 lead, and eventually a win over Montevideo last Friday in Montevideo.

The conference game was a match-up between two of the top teams in the West Central North Conference.

Funk started and finished strong on the hill, holding his opponents to seven hits over seven innings while striking out seven.

“Will pitched a great game,” said head coach Bryan Zollman. “He got ahead of hitters and the defense played well behind him.”

The Streeters had ample chances to score throughout Friday’s game, but couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it.

“We had runners in scoring position a couple times,” said Zollman. “And we hit some balls hard, but nothing was falling.”

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Andrew Primus singled and then was forced out at second base after a Nick Wanderscheid ground ball. But Tyler Schwinghamer singled and both he and Wanderscheid advanced on a passed ball, putting runners on second and third with one out. After Funk struck out, Froseth came to the plate with two out and a chance to either end the game or prolong it. He laced a single to left field, scoring both runners and giving Sauk a 2-1 lead.

Funk then came back in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side despite allowing two base runners.

“We played good defense and that is the key to our success,” said Zollman. “If we make the plays like we did on Friday, and pitch well, we have a great chance to win.”

It also helps when they come up with clutch hits.

“Adam really stepped up,” Zollman said. “We need big hits like that if we want to be successful. He came through big time.”
