Ronald S. “Zig” Carlson of Sauk Centre died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 1, 2014. He was 79 years old.


A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 23, at First Lutheran Church of Sauk Centre with Pastor Rebecca Thomas officiating. A memorial visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A private burial will be held. 


Ronald was born on Feb. 7, 1935, to parents John Emil and Sigrid Carlson in Grand Rapids. He grew up on the family farm near Bovey, graduating from Greenway High School in Coleraine in 1953. He served as a medic in the Army from 1958-1960, based out of McNair Barracks in Berlin, West Germany. Ron worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 37 years, retiring as a Central Office Tech from what became US West in 1993. While working for the phone company he met Margaret Rasmussen, whom he married on Nov. 18, 1961. 


Zig was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, especially the Family Campers group. He also served as a union steward for Communications Workers of America local 7212 of St. Cloud, on the governing board of Knute Nelson Nursing home of Alexandria and the Kandota Township clerk in Todd County for 18 years. Zig’s pride in his work at the phone company and service to his community and country, along with a love of vintage farm tractors, was reflected in his involvement in First Lutheran Church, VFW, Berlin U.S. Veterans Association, IH Collectors and the Sauk Valley Two-Cylinder Club.


In addition to Marge, his three children survive him, Cindy Carlson (Lane Phillips), Brian Mitchell Carlson and Scott Carlson. Zig is also survived by his brother, Heinz Carlson; sister, Hazel Hanson (Kenneth); many other relatives and friends.
